The Fairy Ring

On November 12, 1997 I wrote this poem for my husband, Ben in honor of our 20th wedding anniversary.

Giant boulders, long ago transported from rolling glaciers,
Gray mounds, rounded smooth by eons of moving ice and snow,
The old moraine tumbled together to form a forest hamlet
Where each crevice became a hold for earthen root or toe.
There he lived with the noble gnomes I found frolicking
Amongst sweet wintergreen and fronds of fiddlehead ferns.
Fairy rings, wide circles of fleshy fungi, mark the place
Where music spoke to my heart as the autumn season turned.
From the smaller stones, he built a refuge from the world,
Hidden on the hill, the round home's door opened for me,
And there on a chair he carved from the black wood of cherry,
I rested and rocked my soul to sleep and found his dream
And drank cool sustenance under the tall oaks and beech
With this gentle man of red beard and quiet sapphire eyes.
In the snow, we joined hands as one inside our fairy ring,
Under the dust of elfin magic and love's eternal sigh.
What a perfect day
To wake up and breathe. Sweet breeze,
Alive with wonder!
